Our client purchased an existing cottage near Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. They had been flying up and down the coast for years searching for the perfect place. After finding this, they took a quick breath and we proceeded to custom design a place they could call their own. We had done many projects together and always have seen eye-to-eye. We determined a vision through intuition and past knowledge. At this point, it was determined that we would put together something “perfect”. We developed a theme of modern eclectic design far away from the traditional island bamboo/rattan vibe that we had seen everywhere. Another concern was to keep everything family-friendly and comfy.
Initially, we decided to redo the master bathroom which was a daunting 600 sq ft., repaint everything (including painting all stained woodwork into a solid colour) and install a new kitchen. When immersed in the project the creative juices really started to flow and the master bath became a room with steam bath and outdoor cold plunge area. As the beauty started to unroll and become even more exciting, a custom-finish black limestone floor from India was added. There were many simple alterations to other living areas customized to each family member’s use. We commissioned an Edmonton ceramic artist integrated a ceramic art piece into the powder room comprised of thousands of mosaic tiles… it’s amazing. Eventually, we re-did every square inch of the house and the landscaping. We completely managed this project—furnishings, bedding, dishes, right down to soap and all accessories—so it was ready to move in and enjoy.
As far as art is concerned, it was our pleasure to work with our clients to bring their personal feelings deep into the heart of the house.
The entire project took about 1-1/2 years to complete.
